HILL TRIBE GROUPS - REFERENCE

/ HMONG /   The Hmong are an ethnic group who originated in China or some suggest that they came from Tibet, Siberia or Mongolia. At the start of 18th century, the Hmong migrated to northern Thailand, Laos and Vietnam due to economic and cultural repression under the Qing dynasty. They continued to base themselves in the mountainous regions of these countries and are known as ‘hill tribes’.  Hmong is an umbrella term for many Hmong subgroups and these subgroups are named after distinguishing features of their textiles and dress colours. They also have slightly different languages, customs and traditions.

/ DAO /    The Dao (or sometimes referred to as Yao) originated in China and migrated to Vietnam in the 12th-13th century and continued to until the 20th century. A majority migrated during the Ming dynasty due to failed crops and pressures of Feudalism in China.  They continued to base themselves in the mountainous regions of these countries and are known as ‘hill tribes’.  Dao is an umbrella term for many Dao subgroups and these subgroups are named after distinguishing features of their textiles and dress colours. They also have slightly different languages, customs and traditions.
